Super 8

Essentially J.J. Abram's love letter to Steven Spielberg's adventurous classics spanning from Close Encounters of the Third Kind to E.T., Super 8 is at the helm of the coming of age story meets alien invasion for the 21st century.

With more intelligent blockbusters emerging from Hollywood in recent years, in the form of Nolan and Abrams himself, it is not going unnoticed and is a rare glance into a new field of "Blockbuster" to grace the big screen during the next twenty years.

Stemming from both J.J and Spielberg's minds', the combination of both ideas creates an original classic for the modern audience.

The story is set in the summer of 1979, and focuses on a group of 13-year-old friends. Joel whose mother died four months previous in a factory accident, refuses to go to summer camp and decides to stay home to help his friend Charles finish a short film for the local film festival. Even with his disapproving sheriff father, Joel begins a burgeoning relationship with popular classmate Alice, when she is cast in the film.

Alongside the essential emotional core of the film, the extra terrestrial element is handled with great care by someone with experience when keeping this "something" a secret; as producer of Cloverfield, and co-creator of Lost, Abrams knows when to present the big reveal of the "monster" as Joel sees it for the first time.

Super 8 is one of the more intelligent sci-fi blockbuster's to have graced the big screen in recent years. Nostalgic for the late 1970s when Spielberg films became the hits they were, the music, costumes and general life for the youth was vastly different to computer and gadgetry obsessed children of today's world who stay inside their houses missing out on the imaginative world outside.

Enjoy the simple tale of a bunch of friends experience the biggest adventure any 13 year old could endure, getting involved in top secret army whilst filming a simple short video for a film festival in the trailer below, it's not a surprising film, but has a sweet story to tell whilst showcasing Abrams' love for Super 8 cameras.
