Empire 500

After reading through Empire's definitive all-time classic films reviewed with five stars, I have realised I have a lot of films to watch.

From Airplane to The Wizard of Oz, they cover every genre of film, black and white, silent classics, to the most recent films from 2010. It's remarkable that in that amount of film history, there are only 500 5 star reviews. 


I haven't even finished reading the issue yet, as it does have 500 A-Zs, it may take a while, plus I am relishing the read, because, we don't want to bake our cake and eat it now, do we.

I am FINALLY watching Lady Bird  this afternoon after over 4 months of waiting for the UK release. I hate it when you get a film later than the rest of the world. Because you hear the great things about the film, but you can't watch it yet. So my anticipation for this film is at an all time high. I know the performances are going to be great because Saoirse Ronan has not made a dull film yet. I trust Greta Gerwig to produce a perfect film, she is a great performer as an actress, she writes really fully formed characters. This film is more of a personal film for her, because it's an almost auto-biographical film, it's set in Sacramento California, where Gerwig grew up as a teenager, it takes place in a Catholic school which Gerwig actually didn't attend in high school, but she wanted to add the feeling of being in an environment that is very much the place you want to rebel against as a teenager going through the angst all teens go through. Mankind was born on earth, it wasn't meant to die here

Interstellar Finally, a proper almost three minute trailer for Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic  Interstellar  has arrived on the web. The full length trailer was shown before Godzilla in cinema screens, which is out now and thankfully been put straight onto the world wide web. It is well worth going to see an epic film like Godzilla  just to see this immersive, intriguing trailer on the big screen. What can we learn from the synopsis of the trailer, which is way more expansive and way more descriptive on what Nolan's sci-fi film will encompass, as the teaser encapsulates just what Nolan is famous for, as his flare for giving just what we need but making sure the mystery remains. Well with Michael Caine's voice over creating a great mystery as to what Nolan's idea of space travel or "interstellar travel" is all about, and just what McConnaughey's corn fields have to do with space travel. From Monsters to Godzilla...or (Gojira)

T he brilliance of Monsters, (the 2010 debut film from director Gareth Edwards)   lied with its creation from such a tight budget. The fact that the very monsters who were wreaking havoc, war and destruction on humanity weren't revealed until the end of the film, is weaved so well into a fantastic plot twist you won't see coming. Director Gareth Edwards wrote, directed and created the critically lauded film with the special effects being created from scratch on his own laptop. Managing to create such a film that took everyone by surprise; that it was compared to an indie  Cloverfield  in terms of being a   hit, not commercially but for the most critically lauded as one of the best monster films for a long while.
