Love and Other Drugs

After arriving back in England six days ago, I managed to get into the flow of going to the cinema to watch all the films that are in contention for the award season taking place in January and February.

Directed by Edward Zwick Love and Other Drugs was the first of these contenders; starring the cutest couple on screen, Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, they both play Jamie Randall and Maggie Murdock, a pharmaceutical salesman and a struggling artist with Parkinsons disease who end up romantically involved.

Love and Other Drugs Maggie and Jamie
Although being sold to audiences as a romantic comedy, there are elements of the film that feature such poignant drama also some unsuspecting performances from the two Golden Globe nominated actors.

Love is seen as the other drug when the unique Maggie rejects the charming Jamie countless times in what is nice to see for once, a distinctly unobserved side to the male/female dynamic in a relationship; representing a different altogether romantic comedy with an edge.

The seriousness of the film is played with absolute sensitivity, yet is unyielding in portraying the struggles Parkinsons disease has on such a young woman. The scenes of vulnerability for Maggie in her battle is one of the finest portrayals on screen, no overacting, or playing to conventionality, but showcasing the external processes of Hathaway in portraying real victims of the disease; which just goes to show why she is a contender for Best Actress this year.

A comedy with serious drama intertwined

In fairness, Gyllenhaal is always consistent in every role he plays, but this film belongs to Hathaway's subtle performance, and that which gives the film its heart and emotional credibility. Although the chemistry between the two leads, makes you wonder why they don't make more films together, it's electric.

Verdict: An altogether triumphant indie style romantic comedy, although falls into conventional Hollywood ending syndrome. But watch out for the performances of Gyllenhaal and Hathaway, as the heart and soul of the film.
