TV Rant...the best chat show (in my opinion)

Jonathan versus Graham: The two top chat shows battle to win my heart, mind & my laughs..

I'd just finished watching The Jonathan Ross Show on ITV Player a couple of weeks back, because we don't usually watch that much live TV in our house, because its mostly crap these days (except for specific dramas, like Downton Abbey or Sherlock) it's game shows, reality shows or soaps, not much to whet the appetite.

I noticed a big difference between The Jonathan Ross Show on ITV1 compared to The Graham Norton Show on BBC1, which has definitely made me question my loyalties to Jonathan.

Whilst Ross manages to gain some of THE biggest names (predominantly) to appear on his show to promote new releases; film, TV series' or a new book; and he has his own format which hasn't changed much since prime time BBC1; Graham manages to pack in a hell of a lot more into an infinitely more hilarious show.

There is more to watch and be invested in, compared to Jonathan's old formula, maybe it's because Ross' show is on ITV1 and you have to suffer the adverts, the holy grail of time consuming wastes of space, that Graham's show tends to gain the higher ground for me.

Graham's interviews are so craftily put together (along with the help of his very talented production team) that it is at times so seamless, (and other times completely absurd how he can get to certain links) but you go along with it because it would usually result in a funny anecdote from the celebrity guest/s.

It is a completely genius way to conduct interviews in the day and age where adverts take over the fluidity of Ross' interviews and is completely favourable for more audience enjoyment and viewing figures.

But you have to remember what a chat show was like, when the brilliant and extremely well respected Michael Parkinson was on the ole' telly box, only a mere five years ago.

Parkinson with Paul McCartney, Rachel Weisz and comedian Dave Spikey

In 2012 there are only two race horses at the top of their game; (aside from Alan Carr's Chatty Man on Channel 4), the format of chat shows on the telly has changed dramatically. Graham with his all star couch interviewed at the same time, and Jonathan with his traditional chat show with it's quirky touches of bad jokes and typical humour; which was funnier on the beeb than ITV1 (in my opinion).

When it comes down to it, even with the high brow guests Ross manages to get for his couch on Saturday night on ITV1, I prefer to watch Norton's Friday night show. Simply (and this is just my opinion) because there are no adverts, you laugh a lot more and there is nothing cringe worthy about the hosts stupid antics towards the guests. It isn't all about the host, and with Norton, who is always the consumate professional, you get that. He's a much better comedian too.

Who do you think is the better host? Which show do you watch more than any other? Or have you completely gone off chat shows altogether because they've gone down the route of entertainment than actual interview savvy programming like Parkinson?
