Post Oscar reaction

Sunday 24th February 2013 was Oscar night and arguably the biggest night in the movie business. Again being in Rishikesh I was unable to watch the show live, as I have done once in the past.

Not only is it a tiring, long arduous watch, but, especially more so if the hosts that year are under par for example to mention a year James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosted. Hathaway was doing her best but Franco just let everyone down.

Being in a completely different time zone anyway, being 5 hours ahead of the US, you hope the jokes are good ones, a little bit rebellious and garners some oohs and ahhs from the celebrity filled audience, some cringe worthy jokes or shockers.

McFarlane hosts 2013 Oscars
This year it was hosted by Family Guy creator and comedian Seth McFarlane, who you would think could be a controversial host who pulls the punches in his show as the Griffin family, attacking every racial class, sex, denomination etc etc. but at the Oscars you have to be conservative with your jokes.

I haven't seen the actual ceremony so I have no right to say via other news feeds that it was a disappointment or not. But I will give my opinion on the winners and losers of this glittering night in show business.

Day-Lewis, Lawrence, Hathaway and Waltz with their golden statuettes
The main acting awards were fairly predictable bar one, for Jennifer Lawrence's win for Silver Linings Playbook, beating fellow nominees Emmanuelle Riva in Amour, Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty, 9-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis in her first debut Beasts of the Southern Wild and Naomi Watts for The Impossible. It was unprecedented, especially as it was a complete shock to Lawrence herself, for which she tripped over her dress walking up the stairs to accept the award.

The only film to win four awards on the night was for Director, Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects was Life of Pi which won quite rightly as its use of CGI is predominant and all done in post production. The rights to the book were optioned in 2002 and plenty of directors had been attached to make this book which was classed as impossible to make into a movie ever since. To make the CGI tiger Richard Parker took a long arduous technique in the newest of technology.

Adele was the unsurprising winner for Original Song for her song Skyfall in none other than Skyfall. She had won the Golden Globe and though it didn't win at the BAFTAs because they don't do specific songs, they did win for Original Score for Thomas Newman's music. So overall, Skyfall which is the only Bond film to be nominated at any awards has had an amazing streak of success.

Adele with her Original Song Oscar statuette

Quentin Tarantino is now an awards favourite winning for his Original Screenplay for Django Unchained making it a triple thread along with his BAFTA and Golden Globe. He thanked the cast of the film for making his words work on screen, and among them was now two time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, winning both times whilst being directed by Tarantino in Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained. Perhaps their actor director relationship might turn out to be Auteur centered and along the same lines as Scorcese with DeNiro and DiCaprio.

Hopefully I will be able to watch the whole ceremony via YouTube as some very helpful person did for the BAFTA ceremony previously.
